The Results are In: Viewers LOVE "Murdaugh: Death in the Family"
Take a 91 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes’s “Popcornmeter” and glowing reviews from Variety, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Beast, and combine that with a multi-day streak as the #1 show on Hulu and Disney+, and we think it’s safe to say: this show is a hit.
The Official Companion Podcast is holding onto the number 2 seat in the TV and Film category on Apple Podcasts and is in the top 200 of all podcasts from all genres. The attention has also pushed the original Murdaugh Murders Podcast feed into the top 50 True Crime podcasts on Apple. For context – we’ve not published a new MMP since April 2023 when we changed the podcast’s name to True Sunlight, so it is a big deal to rank that high two and a half years later.

Building a Captivating Cast
Deadline first announced that Hulu was developing a scripted series based on the Murdaugh Murders Podcast before there was even a Murdaugh Murder Trial, but the long wait was worth every minute when we learned in September 2024 that powerhouse actress Patricia Arquette (Severance, High Desert, Medium) was cast as Maggie Murdaugh. The announcement that Jason Clarke (The Last Frontier, Oppenheimer, Zero Dark Thirty) would portray Alex Murdaugh followed in December 2024. Take a look at the casting announcements as they rolled out during pre production and filming earlier in 2025.
