Let’s Go Behind the Scenes

Mandy, Liz, and David shared some of their favorite behind the scenes photos from the stunt set. Scenes like the one with Alex (played by Jason Clarke) driving erratically are shot on specialized sets to protect the cast and crew from injury. Just a reminder that even the mildest scenes take a lot of planning (and a little bit of tv magic) to pull off — so don’t try this at home!

Diving Further into the DNR Case File

In our last episode, we shared the DNR case file from the boat crash that claimed Mallory Beach’s life. The clip below is a compilation of surveillance video collected by DNR as they investigated what happened in the hours that led up to the crash.

News Coverage: The Search for Mallory and the Fight for Justice

For eight days, Mallory’s family and friends joined law enforcement in the dogged search to find her. News outlets closely followed the search, reporting each development as it unfolded. Below is a sampling of articles from those eight days and beyond.

Mandy & Liz’s Days at The Island Packet

While at The Island Packet, Mandy served as breaking news editor, overseeing coverage of all things in the Lowcountry. She was responsible for assigning, editing, and writing stories, as well as producing video and photos for both digital and print. Her reporting ranged from shark sightings and hurricane updates to investigations into police misconduct and government corruption, establishing her as one of the leading voices in the region.

Liz spent 16 years at The Island Packet, beginning her career as copy desk chief before moving into roles as a columnist and senior editor. Over the years, she reported on a wide range of topics, but became especially known for her opinion pieces, which often tackled issues of government corruption with sharp insight and fearless commentary.

Duffie Stone’s Recusal Letter

The day after the boat crash, 14th Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone  asked South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson to transfer the case to another office, citing a conflict of interest because of the connections between three of the boaters and his office. The biggest connection was that Paul Murdaugh’s father, Alex Murdaugh, was a deputy solicitor in Duffie Stone’s office.

Duffie Stone was the first non-Murdaugh solicitor in the 14th Circuit for over 80 years when he was appointed by then-governor Mark Sanford to fill the solicitor’s seat when Randolph Murdaugh III (Alex’s father) retired in 2006.

BTS – First Day on Set

Mandy and David’s photos capture a remarkable milestone in their journey. These behind-the-scenes moments offer a glimpse of their time on set as executive producers, and their smiles say it all: they cherished every second.

Caught on Camera

In the aftermath of the crash, one question immediately rose to the surface: who was behind the wheel when the boat slammed into the bridge? For days, speculation swirled. But a crucial piece of digital evidence began to cut through the confusion.

In a Snapchat video recorded by Paul Murdaugh’s friend, Anthony Cook, Paul is shown standing at the wheel of the boat. Next to him, Anthony’s cousin, Connor Cook, smiles and raises a beer for the camera.

From Headlines to Hulu

In episode two, Randolph shows Maggie and Alex an article Mandy supposedly wrote, titled “Powerful Murdaugh Family Implicated in Boat Crash That Killed 19-Year-Old Mallory Beach.”

The truth is a little different. The original article, published by two male reporters at The State newspaper, was actually titled “Powerful SC Family Faces Scrutiny Following Boat Crash That Killed 19-Year-Old Woman.” Mandy covered the incident in her book, Blood on Their Hands, in chapter 6. While her name isn’t on the byline of the original article, it was Mandy’s reporting, alongside Liz, that laid the groundwork for the story.

Remembering Mallory Beach

Mallory’s parents, Renee Beach and Phillip Beach, have shown incredible strength fighting tirelessly for accountability while honoring their daughter’s memory.

They shared their story with ABC’s 20/20, opening up about Mallory’s life, her untimely death, and the legacy she left behind.

Below is the link to the entire 20/20 episode which aired on January 14, 2022 titled “Fall of The House of Murdaugh.” This episode features several familiar faces including Mandy, attorney Mark Tinsley, and more.

Introducing Mal’s Palz

In honor of Mallory’s passion for animals, her family and friends created a non-profit improving animal welfare in Hampton County. The mission of Mal’s Palz is to build a much-needed animal shelter. According to their website, they have currently raised over $50,000 towards this goal, but more support is still needed. To learn more about Mal’s Palz or donate, please click the link below.

Excerpt from “Blood on Their Hands”

In addition to the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, Mandy’s book, Blood on Their Hands, became a key resource for producers, writers, and cast on Hulu’s Murdaugh: Death in the Family. The book not only chronicled the events but also provided crucial context that helped bring the story to life on screen.

Below is an excerpt from Mandy’s book recounting the days following the boat crash.
