Nearly four years after first reporting that South Carolina Circuit Court Judge Carmen Mullen was caught on video trying to find probable cause to arrest a mentally ill man in her gated neighborhood, Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are finally seeing justice start to take shape. But will there be consequences?
On Sept. 29, 2026, Judge Mullen appeared before the Commission on Judicial Conduct to answer for her actions on Dec. 7, 2017, on Hilton Head Island, when she inserted herself into a landlord-tenant dispute with sheriff’s deputies at the scene.
Judge Mullen says she was duty-bound to protect the man and get him medical help. Does the evidence show that? Not at all — in Mandy’s and Liz’s opinions, anyway. However, good ole’ legacy media, as always, seems to have her back.
On Part One, we share hearing testimony — including from the deputy on the scene that night — and go back to the receipts, comparing Judge Mullen’s sworn story against what she actually said and did while suggesting ways to get the man charged and jailed — a man deputies said had committed no crime.
