Suspended attorney Cory Fleming is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 for his involvement in stealing $4.3 million from Gloria Satterfield’s family.
Fleming, a longtime friend of co-conspirator Alex Murdaugh, accepted a plea deal and pled guilty to one charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in May 2023.
After the death of Murdaugh’s housekeeper Gloria Satterfield back in February 2018, Murdaugh suggested the Satterfield family hire Fleming to represent them.
In episode 10 of Murdaugh Murders Podcast, host Mandy Matney recounted how days after Gloria’s fall on the Murdaugh property, Murdaugh suggested that the Satterfield family file a wrongful death claim against him in order to collect money from his insurance.
Both of Murdaugh’s policy holders settled the estate’s claims; Nautilus Insurance Company for $3.8 million and Lloyd’s of London settled for $505,000. However, the Satterfield family claims Murdaugh stole the settlement from them with Fleming’s assistance.
Fleming was accused of issuing checks from the trust account that held Satterfield’s settlement money into his personal account and claiming the funds were for legal expenses.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Limehouse is prosecuting the case, alongside Kathleen Stoughton and Winston Holliday.
Fleming faces a maximum of five years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 and is scheduled to appear in court at 1:00 p.m. EST on August 15, 2023 in Charleston, South Carolina.

Earlier this month on August 1, ex-banker Russell Laffitte was sentenced to 84 months in federal prison after he was found guilty of conspiring with Murdaugh to steal nearly $2 million from client’s legal settlements. He must also pay restitution of over $3 million to the law firm formerly known as PMPED and Palmetto State Bank, the bank his family founded and of which he was the CEO.
Laffitte’s attorneys filed a notice of appeal for a new trial on August 11 which was later denied by presiding Judge Gergel on August 13.
