Digging into Alex’s Money Trail
Attorney Mark Tinsley didn’t believe Alex Murdaugh when he said he was broke following the boat crash that killed Mallory Beach.
And the line from episode four when Tinsley, portrayed by Tommy Dewey, tells Alex, “I’ll still burn your goddamn house down” sort of happened. Alex confronted Mark at an annual meeting of South Carolina trial lawyers about the civil suit. What Mark actually said was “If you don’t think I can burn your house down, and that I’m not doing everything, I’m not going to do everything, you’re wrong. You need to settle this case.”
Of course, Mark was speaking figuratively – meaning, he was planning to subpoena all of Alex’s financial records after Alex refused to settle the boat crash wrongful death suit. When Mark testified at Alex’s early 2023 murder trial, he said it was difficult to imagine someone like Alex, with his case load and generational wealth, to be considered broke.
So Mark did what a good lawyer does . . . he filed a motion to compel on October 16, 2020 after Alex, through his lawyers, refused to provide his financial information. Mark had requested a listing of all of Alex’s checking and savings accounts, 401(k) accounts, IRA accounts, and such to which Alex responded:
“Defendant objects to this Interrogatory on the grounds that it is overly broad and unduly burdensome and seeks material that is irrelevant, immaterial, and not reasonably calculated to lead to the discovery of admissible evidence.” – From Exhibit B of Motion to Compel filing
The same response was filed by Alex to Mark’s request for stock and bond information, mutual funds and investments, and property Alex owned.
The Badge that Raised Questions
Alex became a volunteer solicitor with the 14th circuit in 1999, and while he only tried a handful of cases with his father in 20 years, he always had the badge that gave him the authority of a solicitor. The SCDNR file from the night of the boat crash included a statement from an emergency room nurse who said Alex Murdaugh moved from room to room checking on each of the boat crash victims. In her statement to law enforcement, she recalled another staff member telling her that Alex had reassured one of the patients, saying, “We will figure this out. It will all be okay.”
The photo below, later introduced during Alex’s double homicide trial, shows his assistant solicitor’s badge clearly visible, hanging from his pocket. Tinsley believes Alex was abusing his power by using the solicitor’s badge the night of the boat crash.
On June 20, 2021, only 14 days after Maggie and Paul’s murders, “The Island Packet” published an article about a potential obstruction of justice charge against Alex, presumably for using his solicitor’s badge and trying to cover for Paul the night of the boat crash. That Island Packet report said the South Carolina State Grand Jury was going to consider the case, but as of November 2025, no charges have been filed against anyone for obstruction of justice.
The CFO’s Tell-All Testimony
As CFO of Parker Law Group (formerly PMPED), Jeanne Seckinger was involved in all things regarding money at the law firm. During Alex’s trial, she testified that she confronted Alex about possible missing funds from one of his cases on the afternoon of June 7, 2021.
Jeanne went on to testify that Alex got a phone call or a text during the conversation about the missing money, and that it was somebody in his family letting him know that his father’s health was declining due to the end-stage lung cancer. Jeanne stated she immediately ended the conversation so Alex could attend to his father, but then she got a call from Alex’s extension later that day. It was Alex asking about his 401(K) information.
The $192,000 Check: Inside the Faris Fee Theft
Several witnesses testified about the Faris Fee theft during Alex Murdaugh’s double homicide trial, including Chris Wilson and Jeanne Seckinger. The Faris case stemmed from a 2015 car accident that resulted in a personal injury lawsuit. Murdaugh and Wilson jointly represented the client, Mr. Faris, ultimately securing a $5.5 million settlement. From that case, Alex earned $792,000 in attorney fees.
A key piece of evidence—the now-infamous check—was introduced at trial on February 9, 2023. As shown in the image below, the check was dated March 10, 2021, and made out for $192,000 to Richard Alexander Murdaugh, signed by Chris Wilson. The memo line, partially redacted, reveals only the visible portion: “– Fees.”
Timeline of Maggie’s Last Day
Some of Maggie’s last day can be pieced together from her cellphone data — but it’s important to note that this is not a complete picture. We’ll never know what Alex said to her, or exactly what her last few moments looked like. But based on her cellphone data, it seemed to be an average day for her up until the moments prior to her murder.
“Blanca” is the Murdaugh’s longtime housekeeper, Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson.

Maggie the Mother, Sister, and Aunt
Testimony from Marian Proctor, Maggie Murdaugh’s sister added a deeply personal layer to Alex Murdaugh’s murder trial.
Marian testified that she and Maggie were close and spoke on the phone often, especially as Maggie drove between Moselle, Edisto Beach, and Charleston. On June 7th, Marian encouraged her sister to go spend time with Alex while his father was in the hospital. It was the last time Marian ever spoke to her sister. Marian would go on to testify that she was confused about why Alex wasn’t searching for the “real killers” in the weeks after Maggie and Paul were killed.
Marian told the jury that she believed the murders were connected to Paul’s 2019 boat crash, but that changed in September 2021, when she learned of Alex’s embezzlement, drug abuse, and the fake roadside shooting.
Marian also described her sister as a loving mother who was dedicated to Paul and Buster.
Marian’s daughters loved their Aunt Maggie, she went on to say, and Maggie enjoyed spa days and doing feminine things with her nieces that she didn’t get to do with Buster and Paul. Multiple sources, regardless of their relation to Maggie, have described her as a warm motherly figure.
The Video that Runied Alex’s Alibi
Alex swore under oath that he was napping at the main house when Maggie and Paul were murdered at the kennels. In this Snapchat video from Paul taken at 8:44 p.m., just minutes before they were shot, you can clearly hear Alex’s voice.
Gathering Storm Timeline
Journalist and researcher Beth Braden combed through dozens of court filings and previous Murdaugh Murders Podcast reporting to put together a comprehensive timeline of events that put financial pressure on Alex leading up to the murders of Maggie and Paul.
