Remembering Mica’s Story, Justice, Sisterhood, and Truth On International Women’s Day

Happy Sunday!

While we didn’t get to know Mica while she was alive, we have been honored to learn about her life story in the past 10 months.

Mica was a warrior, a dreamer and a believer. She had big plans of moving to Kenya and helping people around the world. No matter how much she suffered from abuse, she continued to advocate for good.

We now know about the horrific abuse she endured in the years and months leading up to her death.

We know how hard she tried to get away from JP Miller.

We know she was failed TOO MANY TIMES by Horry County and Myrtle Beach Police — who dismissed her when she asked for help and who took her husband’s word over hers time and time again. We hope those officers are thinking of Mica today and all of the ways they could have saved her.

We know that Mica’s life MATTERED to so many people and those who love her are fighting every day to help women battling coercive control.

Friday would have been Mica’s 31st birthday and today we honor and remember Mica. And we will never stop pursuing justice for her.

Yesterday was international women’s day and I took a moment to reflect.

When I think about the struggles and atrocities that Mica allegedly faced, I tend to also think about how fortunate I am and exude gratitude for the blessings I have in my life… I am so thankful to have friends, family and a crew of AMAZING women around me.

I surround myself with incredibly supportive, kind, inspiring women who cheer me on, lift me up, and are always down to clown.

I never had a sister, but I’m so grateful for the girls who have shown me sisterhood and I encourage all women to stand by other women who are facing coercively controlling relationships, abuse, violence… all of it.

Two weeks ago, Liz broke news exposing Pastors JP Miller and Wayne Miller Accused Of Sexual Abuse Targeting Minors In New Lawsuit and last week Liz broke another story on Jane Doe 2’s Lawsuit Accusing JP Miller Of Sexual Abusing Child While He Was A Teacher At Wayne Miller’s Christian School

Sometimes you don’t know what others are going through, but being there for each other allows the truth to flourish in a trusting environment.  In the face of so much violence and legislation aimed at destroying our liberty, health and right to live peaceably…. We ladies need to stick together and I hope you’ll think about that this week as you encounter members of your circle… and those outside of it.

There are two women in particular that are new to my circle.  Each has been an inspiration to me as we bring the ‘Murdaugh’ Hulu show to life in Atlanta.  Each of them is an advocate for women.

Erin Lee Carr has been a bright light in a dark world for me — an example of someone who can do good in the true crime world and succeed while sticking to their own ethics and values.

Like Liz and I, Erin gravitates toward complicated true crime stories and tells them in a way that is truthful, victim-focused, and thought-provoking.  In fact, Erin created and directed of my favorite documentaries of all time — Mommy Dead And Dearest and I Love You Now Die… the latter being the basis for our Pesky Picks discussion in February.   Erin is also an author of a fabulous and lifechanging book for me as someone who is still learning how to process enormous guilt –All that you leave behind: A Memoir… .

But more than all her impressive accolades, Erin is a friend that I truly believe in. She makes me proud to be part of the Hulu project knowing that she’ll do right by the story and the victims.  She is Five Stars in every way!

I can’t announce who the amazing actress / director / author is playing me in the show quite yet. But I promise y’all she is a BIG DEAL! Her work as an actress boasts an enviable resume, and her more recent foray into directing created a seminal work of art that David and I both related to on so many levels.  Her careful adaptation of truth into drama, attention to nuanced issues, and ability to communicate powerful messages through shedding light on often misrepresented or underrepresented themes makes me so proud to have her portraying me… I’m shocked and honored… but oh so excited!!

* Also this actress wanted to meet for margaritas as an ode to @elizfarrell and me because that was our thing during the Murdaugh investigation. I love her so much.

As always, your support is immensely appreciated and keeps us motivated to expose the truth wherever it leads, give voice to victims and get the story straight.

Stay Tuned, Stay Pesky and Stay In The Sunlight…
