As Murdaugh: Death in the Family streams on Hulu, I’ve been flooded with emotion — pride, grief, gratitude, and maybe most of all… catharsis. It’s wild to see the story that I covered for millions of listeners, from my parent’s kitchen table years ago, now playing on screens across the country.
To honor how far we’ve come, we’re releasing Remastered versions of the Murdaugh Murders Podcast — the series that started it all. These episodes include new reflections from Liz and me (and David and others), looking back on how each breakthrough happened, what we were feeling at the time, and how the truth finally broke through the “good ol’ boy” system that tried so hard to silence victims.
Revisiting these episodes while watching the Hulu series has been surreal. We poured everything we had into this reporting — often at great personal cost — and seeing the work dramatized on screen is both validating and healing. It’s also a powerful reminder of why this fight for transparency and justice is far from over.
But the reporting carried in these episodes, the fan fare around the TV show, and the series itself is not some self-aggrandizing showcase of our talents. The wider audience that the series reaches on Hulu and Hulu on Disney plus bolster’s our ability to keep watch on the evil doers that attempt to pervert the justice system.
The Hulu series demonstrates to onlookers, to criminals operating within the system, to and our unhinged haters too… that if you make bad choices like participating in corruption, like not doing your job as a public agent or agency, or up to and including murdering your family… journalists are watching and eager to expose you… filmmakers are eager to tell that story… and the world is eager to celebrate your downfall…
So make better choices and perhaps you can be the hero and not the villain in Season Two if we’re able.
If you’ve been with us from the beginning, thank you. You made this movement possible. I hope these remastered episodes give you a deeper look at what it took — emotionally, mentally, spiritually — to bring sunlight to the darkest corners of the justice system.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening, for believing, and for shining light with us.
