From Hilton Head to Hulu and Back Again – Clock That Tea With Us!
Happy Monday!
We are finally back in Hilton Head culling through hours of interviews with creators, cast and crew from Murdaugh: Death in the Family… Click that link to see a trailer viewed almost 11 million times by an audience eager to see what has been six years in the making.
As we’ve mentioned on the shows these last couple weeks, Liz, Eric Alan, David and I have been on the road in Los Angeles and New York collecting footage for the Murdaugh: Death in the Family Official Podcast. This podcast series will unmask all the emotional truths behind this story. It will connect the dots between the story truth revealed in the series and the actual truth we have been reporting on for the last 6 years.
After two weeks of non-stop travel, scripting, and interviews (all the while publishing amazing episodes of COJ and TSP), we finally returned home to our eager puppies and got to work editing and refining with the teams at Universal, Hulu and Disney.
For the longest time, and for very good reason, we have been publishing MMP, COJ and TSP with only ourselves as the final decision makers as to what gets published. This collaborative effort required zoom rooms of 20-40 people from departments within the largest entertainment companies in the world… and that has been a learning experience for sure. But has also been eye opening as to all the machinations necessary to bring a show like MDTIF to life. So you know, MDTIF is the acronym we use for the series 😀 and MDTIFOP for the Official Podcast.
David (who did a great job on COJ #146) and Eric Alan Daume, have been leading the charge to make sure the mountain of details are all moving in the right direction so that these filmed interviews are able to land “on-platform” – that’s right! In addition to 50-minute+ audio episodes that will hit Hulu’s podcast network, we’ll also have video episodes featuring archival content, core interviews, and yours truly guiding the way. And there is SOOOOO much involved in elevating the audio episodes to a place where Universal 🌍, Hulu 📺, and Disney 🐭 all feel comfortable the product meets their expectations of quality… but we are doing just that.
We are excited for you all to hear from co-creators Michael D. Fuller and Erin Lee Carr, actors in the show like Brittany Snow, Alicia Kelley, Kathleen Wilhoite, Johnny Berchtold, and wildly talented crew like Director Kat Candler and Costume Designer Joseph La Corte. Plus some other VERY RECOGNIZABLE NAMES that we are in the middle of scheduling for the next round of interviews in October.
But after all that travel and work, and still more to plan, I felt so grateful to be filming scenes for the series companion at my parents’ house where we started the Murdaugh Murders Podcast four years ago
I started the Murdaugh Murders Podcast with David back in 2021 because we both knew this was a story the world needed to hear and we knew that we needed to be the ones who told it in a way that was respectful to victims and that advocated for justice.
Liz, whose character we meet in the series, was my source of sanity throughout the Murdaugh investigation. She was there on day one pushing authorities to release more information in the boat crash case and calling sources who all said the same thing — that the driver of the boat was from a powerful family and that the fix was already in. He would “get away with it” if we didn’t stay on top of the story and push for answers. She was with me when we were followed by a cop in Hampton while investigating this story.
So we stayed on the story. For more than 6 years. And here we are today — with a major television production about to be released on Hulu and Hulu on Disney Plus. AND hosting an Official Podcast about the Hulu series that was inspired by all of that hard-earned reporting, the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, my book Blood on Their Hands, and elements of COJ and TSP too.
